Making the People’s landscape: Landscape ideals, collective labour, and the People’s parks (Folkets Parker) movement in Sweden, 1891-present

Beginning in the 1890s, workers’ associations and social-democratic activists Sweden developed a series of People’s Parks (Folkets parker) that extended across length breadth country. By mid-twentieth century, nearly every city, town, village boasted its own Park. Built for relaxation recreation, as well political agitation, Folkets parker also represented significant expropriation transformation bourgeois landscape ideals process became places where new, working class-based folk, or people, could come to be. This paper traces production landscape, focusing on ways which people reworked order contest constructions Swedish national identity, while asserting their power shape identity.
